Construction Safety

We attach the greatest importance to the health and safety of all persons employed on TII construction projects and directly affected by the works.

TII expects all construction work to be carried out in compliance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005; Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 to 2020; the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013 and all other current applicable Regulations, Codes of Practice and Guidance.

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013 are aimed at protecting workers from accidents and ill health in the construction industry. Under the regulations and depending on the procurement model established for each project, as Client, TII will appoint consultants and/or contractors to undertake the roles of Project Supervisor Design Phase (PSDP), and Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS).

TII also carries out safety audits to monitor and check the performance of the contractors working on TII projects. TII will partner closely with all our consultants and contractors to ensure continuous improvement of health and safety on our construction projects.

Road Construction Safety

Transport Infrastructure Ireland holds the safety of its staff and all those impacted by our operations in the highest regard. To this end, we have introduced a number of measures over the past few years to improve the standard of safety within the road construction sector. The introduction of a site safety inspection programme has enabled us to achieve a consistent approach to safety management. We can benchmark against industry standards, allowing us to make improvements in safety standards with our delivery partners.

Construction of Road Schemes Health and Safety Advice Note Manual

The Construction of Road Schemes Health and Safety Advice Note manual outlines the expectations of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). These advice notes have been put together based on situations which have been encountered while carrying out the Site Safety Inspections and Temporary Safety Measure Inspections.

  • They include a series of illustrations showing good and bad practices across the industry.
  • They are designed to be clear and simple, helping to drive improvement across all TII sites.
  • A pre-planning process for all tasks will ensure that there is a process in place to prevent accidents from happening, and to keep a high safety standard.
  • These advice notes are an excellent communication tool for sharing learnings and good practices that are being utilised on projects across the industry. It is important to note also that by issuing these advice notes, we are not claiming that this is the only correct or safe method but rather sharing the best practices we have observed during inspections.
